A little while later, we ran into these DWP guys. They also gave us free, ice-cold water from their truck - the day was very hot.
This is the conversation I had with one of the DWP guys:

Since I used to work for DWP, I took the extra time to download this one. I'm glad you are showing all the different views around the City. Keep up the good work!

I worked for the DWP from 1990 to 2000 (On the 'water' side).
Even though it was STRICTLY against the rules, there were times I had to go into the South Central/Watts area.(Imperial Hwy, just east of the 110 and other places) I always, ALWAYS had a .357 magnum tucked under the front seat of my truck. The guy in the video is right. You were NUTS for walking around down there. You have NO idea how lucky you are that nothing happened to you.

At least Bruce wasn't driving a DWP truck when she was crossing the streets...

Great project. And you are getting both sides. I moved to Leimert Park near the corner of Crenshaw and MLK nearly three years ago. I'm white and maybe the only one within several blocks. I've never once been accosted or harangued by anybody because of that. That's not to say there aren't times of road rage or people asking for money, just as in any metropolis.
This is a pretty safe area.I just took the bars off the windows of my house. Some of my neighbors protested. They've heard the stories, just like I have. I don't know that they are true. I don't feel they are.
But it's people like the DWP workers that keep white and black hoods separate and the understanding low. They like individuals but are afraid of groups. Most whites never consider moving to even the best black neighborhoods because they are told by their parents they could be killed at any moment and it's more likely to happen because they're white. Sad Commentary.
It sounds like you had an OK time down here. I know you feel a little out of place and uncomfortable and think you stand out because of your color, but do it a few more times and it's the same as walking anywhere else. Imagine how a black man could feel walking down nearly any street in America. Then think if you saw him would you wonder if he belonged on that street? Not likely. And I don't think most people who live in the Soul of Los Angeles wonder "what's that white person doing here?"

ARE YOU SERIOUS?? If so, you're a moron. You *really* think it's the DWP??? Those of us (No matter WHAT neighborhood)that put that city back together, in record time, after the 94' quake?? Thinking like this makes me sick.
If you need to point a finger, point it at your own 'politico's' who are doing the dividing.
